Japanese Legends: Art, Theatre, Samurai, and the Performance “When I Become a Samurai 2”

Japanese Legends: Art, Theatre, Samurai, and the Performance “When I Become a Samurai 2”

50 minutes

We invite you to a performance and an evening of Japanese theatre. At the beginning of the evening, we will explore Japanese culture in the magical atmosphere of the theatre. You will see authentic objects brought from Japan, taste unusual sweets, get answers to your questions about travelling to this unique country, and discover many fascinating and curious facts about manga, kabuki, geishas, and samurai. The evening will be hosted by Marina Dunaeva, a Tallinn-based guide and creator of tours to Japan. Afterwards, you will see the Flying Cow theatre production “When I Become a Samurai 2”. This is our second performance inspired by Bushido, the samurai code, and it explores two new principles: moderation (節) and courage (勇). Two Japanese tales, like waves rising from the depths, pose challenging questions: — How can we find moderation in our desires without losing ourselves in a world of temptation? — What is true courage: fighting an external enemy or facing the one within? The audience is guided through these stories by spirits and creatures from Japanese legends — Tengu and other guardians who may both show the way and put those who follow it to the test. The performance is filled with the atmosphere, music, and poetry of Japanese culture. Expressive movement, elements of acrobatics, and martial arts create an immersive space that carries the audience into the world of Japanese tales and legends. Are you ready to discover your samurai spirit? Then we look forward to seeing you at the theatre!
